He then grooves the shoe and cools it in a trough of cold water. The tools a smith uses when shoeing a horse are a knife which he calls a botoon, a rasp, a hammer, a cold chisel and a pincers. When the smith is sharpening the teeth of a harrow he reddens the old teeth and puts a sharp point on each tooth. The blacksmith will only shoe wheels; the spokes and felloes and the stock must be together before he will shoe any wheel. The smith measures the wheel and band. If the band is too big, he reddens it in the fire and cuts a bit off with a clift. He welds the band again.
