- Thatching
There is not much thatching carried on nowadays in this district as most of the houses are slated.
Houses were thatched with wheaten, oaten, or rye straw. Ledge was also used.
The thatcher pulls the straw Etc. the same length into little bundles ready for use.
He then climbs up the ladder bringing with him a bundle of straw and and some hazel or [?] scallops, pointed at each end.
He begins thatching at the bottom right hand side of the roof. He places one of the bundles on the roof, & fastens it down firmly with a scallop which has been twisted into the shap of a bow, driving the sharp ends down through the scraws which are laid down on the rafters. He uses a wooden mallet to hammer the scallop down firmly.
