  2. In our home we churn our milk in a churn worked by hand, with what is called a churn staff. It is a nice deal stick and is about six inches wide and four feet long. It is put on what is called a dash. It is a round piece of wood with little holes all around it to let the milk pass up and down through it when it beaten.
Our churn is three feet high and twenty-one inches wide on the top and the same on the bottom, there is what they call a crib on the churn and that leaves it as wide on top as on the bottom.
The side of it are round and there are two handles on it for the purpose of moving it.
