  1. In the year 1825 there was a hedge school in the townland of Aughatoten in the Barony of Tullygarvey. The work was carried on in a field called Stoney Batter. The pupils were taught by a man named Master Rudden.
    The teacher lodged in his own house. He was paid by the pupils
    The subjects learned were Arithmetic, Irish, English, Grammer and Dictation. Irish was spoken in teaching.
    Writing was done by quill pens and slate pencils on slates.
    The pupils were seated on long seats. The teacher wrote on a black-board. The books produced were Irish books, single and double spelling books, grammers and Arithmetics

    Aughatoten is situated about three miles from Cootehill beside the village of Tullyvin.
