   Some of the children who had no slates wrote in the clay with a burnt stick.

   At the present moment there is a family named Hoggs in the Billis, The Billis is five miles distant from Virginia. It is said that their ancestors did much to hunt this school-master out of the country, mainly by persecuting him. The old teachers got very little encouragement except from the children's parents. The object of the English ruling government was to keep the Irish race in ignorance.
