  1. When the rack rent was
    in vogue, the Bailiff used to
    go around and warn the tenants
    to be ready to pay the rent
    on what-ever date he told
    them. Anyone who was not
    able to pay or in arrears
    was to go to Cavan and
    state his reasons.
    An old man named
    Hugh Fitzsimons and a neighbour
    Peggy Fitzsimons, Cormaddyduff, Virginia, Co. Cavan, one in arrears, and the other not able to pay, started to walk a distance of almost 20 miles. They started before the down and arrived in Cavan about 2 o clock p.m. and went to the land-lord's office with out eating anything. The land-lord asked the man what he was able to pay. He threw his purse on the table saying ''there's all I possess''
