  1. The houses long ago were mostly thatched. The thatch was got from the straw.
    The old people had a bed in the kitchen. It was called a stretcher. The fire was always at the gable wall. The front of the chimney was made of mortar. I never heard of the old houses having no chimney or having the fire in the middle of the floor.
    The floor in the old houses were mostly made of clay. Half doors are not common in the district, but they were common long ago.
    Turf and coal was used for fire long ago
