    Boot Making
Long ago the people had to make their own boots. They used to have to tan the leather.
They had wooden lasts and wooden pegs instead of nails. This was the custom up to the year 1890 and then they began to make iron sprigs and iron lasts and better leather.
The soles were made of wood and toe caps were not stitched across. In winter the wooden pegs swelled and kept the soles tight, so that the damp did not get in.
