  1. The fairs are held here in the Fair Green at the top of the Main Street, leading North to Athlone, a few yards from the Railway Station of Ferbane. There is "a Fair Green" there. Long ago fairs were held on "Commons" in the country, but nowadays they are held on the streets of towns although there is a "green" or market-square in every town.
    Sometimes buyers or jobbers come to farmers' houses to buy stock. If they come to the houses a day or two before a fair looking for animals it is a sign that the fair will be good and buying "brisk", as the people say.
    Fairs held throughout the country which have been discontinued are due to lack of trade. Buyers find it more convenient to come to a town for a fair because as regards their own travelling and the dispatching of stock, afterwards
