    but oly a small portion of the back or the part furthest from the point of attack,
    At that time most of the land about Ferns was covered by trees which ran into strips of woodland, stretching for miles across that part of the country, one of the wooded strips ran right up to cruic na mallacht affording excellent cover and protection for such attack which was no quick or easy task in those days. Proof of that fact still remains as one field bears its old Irish name _ Gort -na - Coille and it lies on the Ferns side of Cruic na Mallacht.
