    "Hawtrey White" stories in this area are quite common, maybe because he had the reputation of being a bold bad man in the troubled period of '98.
    He lived in a house at a place called Peppard's Castle about a mile and half from here.
    He was "Priest Hunter" No 1 of this district and evidently has earned for himself undying ill fame in that respect. He is supposed to have shot a man near his own avenue, thrown him into a marl hole, so that his ghost would keep guard over a box containing treasure (probably loot) that he was putting
