  1. About one hundred years ago there was an old school near Ballinamuck in one of Pat Gray's fields now. The teacher was old Master Whitney. There were no books at that time only one and that was called the old Universal spelling book with the meanings of all the principal words in the English language. The slates the scholars had for writing on were framed with wood to protect them. There were no steel pens nor led pencils and the scholars wrote with quills. When the scholars would not know their lessons the teacher would horsewhip them. The teachers had no salary only what they got from the people.
