  1. The three local fairs held in our district are as follows : - Kilbeggan, Mullingar, and Tyrrellspass. The fairs are always held in towns. Sometimes people make bargains at cross-roads. There are no old traditions about fairs held on hills. Some fairs are held in the streets, in squares, or in fairgreens.
    Sometimes toll is paid on cattle. Luck money is given on animals almost in every case ; it is called the luck penny. The luck penny may amount to sixpence or a shilling, or so according to the value of the animal. The people strike hands, or spit on their hands when making bargains. Cattle are marked by cutting a bit of hair out of their ears, or sides, or by marking their ears with an ear marker, or by branding them.
