- After the Norman invasion the Nugent families were lords of this district. The Castle of the " Black Barne " was taken over by the Nugents. Another member of the same family went to live in Toher Castle and another in Carlanstown about 4 miles south of Finea. They made the laws for the whole district. They also compelled the people to till the land for them. They built the first bridge of wattles across the River Inny and the crest of that family is still to be seen in the new stone bridge. In Arkins' garden this old castle was erected and about fifty years ago when the house ( Arkins' ) was being repaired a stone bearing the name Nugent was found it the wall.
