- Long ago there was a great destruction in Ireland. The famine was the cause of this. The cause of the famine was a blight on the potato crop. The year of the famine was 1848. The potatoes, at the time was the main food of the people of all the counties of Ireland. During the famine thousands of Irish people died.
Every day the people would be dying at the side of the road. Some of them would go out and eat the grass and weeds.
Before the famine started there was a man in the market with a cart of potatoes. The man was asking three and sixpence for the cart, and he would only get a half-crown for it. The man got angry when he would not get his price. Then he went down to(continues on next page)
