  1. These also have changed but the change has been more in wheels and axle than in body. The very old wheels were a solid circle of wood in which the axle was fixed, the axle revolving in "guedgeons" driven into the under part of the shaft. This device required frequent greasing and no carman would venture a journey without a horn of grease fitted into a socket on the straddle. The old straddle is also gone. In the old type the two cross-boards were visible
