    The Slate Quarries
    Within a mile from the school the district abounds in slate and the making of slates for roofing has been the only industry for generations. The townlands of Ahenny and Clashnasmuth became the property of the Victoria Slate Quarry Ltd. about 1863. Quarrying was then carried out on a large scale and even an export trade with England & the continent was established. The slate made had the name of being the finest in Europe.
