On a hill called the Cnoc Bán in Ballyphilip parish of Ballingarry County Tipperary...

    (continued from previous page)
If Kilkenny won the toss they had the right of taking the ball to the Kilkenny side of the river and play commenced there. Should Tipperary win, play commenced at the Tipperary side.
The team that succeeded in hurling the ball home to its own district won.
As this meant hurling the ball over a distance of three miles it will be easily seen that the contest generally lasted the greater part of the day. Should night intervene before victory had been secured by either side, the match had to be replayed at a future date.
Tipperary was nearly always successful in these encounters
