  1. In former times, houses were far more numerous than they are to day. In various places throughout the parish remains of old houses are still to be seen. They were built in hollows quite close to each other. These old houses were usually roofed with thatch.
In every kitchen in those houses a "settle bed" was to be seen. This bed was beside the wall but could be taken out when required. When not in use as a bed, it acted as a piece of furniture and could be used as a seat.
The fire place was nearly at the gable end wall. The chimney was made of clay and wattles but in some of the old houses a ole in the thatch served as a chimney.
In many old houses there were no windows The floors of the old houses were made of clay The clay was mixed with water and made into a kind of mortar and danced down into the floor until it was hard and solid.
Half doors are to be seen in many houses to day, and all the old houses had half doors.
Timber and turf were largely used for fuel and in summer time, the dried droppings of animals.
