- The making of candles was commonly carried on in this locality about fifty years ago. First a sheep was killed and the suet of it was boiled until there was nothing left but grease dip. Wicks had to be bought and as soon as the grease was ready they were dipped one by one into it and then left aside to dry. Then they were dipped again and so on and each time they were dipped the grease became thicker on the wick until it was as thick as a candle. Sometimes they were rough. At times people would have baskets of candles made. The making of clogs
The clogs were worn before the leather boots were manufactured. The soles were made from seasoned wood with little bars of iron across to prevent them from wearing too quickly. the upper part was made of leather. They were very heavy and very uncomfortable.
