  1. In Loughmore there used to be great hurlings long ago. There was to be a great match on a particular Sunday.
Baron Purcell was captain of one team. There was a certain man whom he did not want on the team. In order to get rid of him he sent him to Dublin on Saturday with a message for his brother, thinking he would not be back till Monday. Just as the teams were getting ready on Sunday the man came running into the field.
"You rascal," said Purcell, "Why didn't you go with the message?" For answer he handed him his brother's written reply. "You deserve to see this match." They put him sitting on a chair with his feet in a firkin of butter and so hot was he that the butter soon ran in oil.
