(collected in the locality) Told by Edward Fahey (aged about 60), Gortkelly, to my brother. 20-1-'38.
It is said that there was a hedge-school where Mrs John Ryan, Ballyboy is living at present. It is a cowhouse to-day, There was school in some farm-houses, A lot of children gathered into one house in the night. They used to write with quills, It was on boards they used to write on, There was no blackboards at that time.
    Patrick Ryan Gortkelly.
