    On another occasion there was a circus on the green and there was such a high tide that it came up on the green and surrounded the circus tent. The performance had to be abandoned that night as nobody could attend it.

  2. Some years ago (my father could not be sure of the year but probably it was during the war) the river Deel overflowed it's banks. The first place of local interested at which it did havoc was at Newbridge. The water, having risen to a height of ten feet, burst through the bridge, tore away the well-built wall and spread over the level country eastwards. For a distance of three miles (to Nantinan Holy Well) the country was a sheet of water almost resembling an ocean.
    The country from Nantinan to Askeaton was more hilly and the water was kept on with greater force. Wynds of hay were swept onwards as were also branches of trees and a goat. At Askeaton several people whose lands and houses are beside the river were prisoners until the water reduced. A wooden
