  1. About fifty years ago a hurling match between Kilfinny and Croagh was played in Rossmore near Kilfinny. There were twenty one men on each side. The strongest men of each parish were chosen. This particular match resulted in a draw. The men who won most fame were Michael Hannan an uncle to the present Hannans of Ballyfolin, John Kiely called "Dynamite", a nickname, and John Halloran who was a native of Askeaton but who worked in this locality. Goal posts were not used at that time. Two stones marked the goal space. The ball was made of roasted corks with woollen thread wound around them and they were covered with leather.
Some of the hurleys were called crooks. Crooked hurleys which were made of crab trees and others - boss hurleys made of ash. Each man made his own hurley. The hurlers had no special hurling suits in those days only their every day clothes.
