  1. About a mile and a half from Passage West stands a castle which is situated in the Parish of Monkstown. It was built about 400 years ago and is in good condition to the presant day.
    It was owned by Mr. Deacon and his wife. The castle was built by his wife as a present for her husband when he returned home from the Spanish war.
    First of all she opened a shop and sold everything that people would require. Then she got men to build her the castle. The men were not given money but were told they could get anything they wanted from the shop. When the castle was built she made up her accounts to see if she had spent any money in making it. She found out that she had spent only 4 1/2d.
    When her husband was coming home he saw the castle from the harbour, and he did not like it, as he thought it would be the first place an enemy would attack if they were besieging the place. The went away after a few months and left the castle in the possession of other people.
