  1. Long ago the old schools were held in private houses and the children paid twopence a week to the master for payment. I have heard that there was a school in Ballysurdane. Indoors these schools were carried on. Schools were also carried on in the farmers houses. Some of the teachers lodged in the houses.
The subjects that were taught were much like the ones nowadays. No Irish was taught in those schools. Irish was in the children by nature, and Irish was there natural way of speaking. English books were used in those times. writing was done (in) with slates and slate pencils. Standing by the ditches the children were arranged in classes.
Two blackboards were used in those schools. The teachers remained about a fortnight in each district. The name of one teacher was Redmond Roche who taught in an old hedge school. After some time he got anational school.
