  1. In the penal days there were no schools in Ireland and the people had to go to other countries to be educated. There was a few hedge schools around here. There was one in Lisdugan one in Cecilstown and one at the Keitra. The teacher in Lisduggan had free board and lodging in a house belonging to O'Connells. He had to teach the O'Connell family by night.
    The teacher at the Kaeitra wrote a song about the Keitra in Irish and here is one verse of it
    Céithre cam agus coillte
    Nár bhach le h-aon duine
    Ach dhuine amháin a bhí ar buille.

    There was also a school in Castlemagner and a man named Linehan taught there. Long ago they used to put each
