- (continued from previous page)the then parish priest of Newmarket, decided to go and question him. They did so, but as he drew near, they got so terrified, they were unable to speak. He appeared again on a few occasions after this incident, but on the last appearance, he was heard crying more loudly then ever before.
"Dia le-m annam," and after that night was never seen or heard of again.
- In the seventeenth century the McAuliffe's ruled over
the greater part of this locality. Their principal
castles were at Castle-McAuliffe and Carrigcastle
near Newmarket.
Meelin derived its name from a girl of the McAuliffes
named Maolan. This girl is said to have the gift
of prophesy, and she foretold "that the McAuliffes
would be conquered and that none of them would yet
live in Meelin."
The McAuliffes were conquered and their lands taken
from them.
Maolan McAuliffe was to be married, but before her
marriage, she flew from Meelin to a rock in a townland
of Newmarket parish called "The Island" which is a
short distance from Castle-McAuliffe, and disappeared
That rock is still known as Maolan's Rock. - Collector
