In this district very few people get married in Lent for the old proverb says:-
"Married in Lent live to repent".
In some parts of Ireland it is believed that a girl born in Lent will never marry.

  2. Paddy Moynihan was a famous man who lived at Leacha Bán Ballingeary near the boundary between Cork and Kerry.
One morning he got up and drove the cows out of the night pasture or "bán" as it was called at that time as he was anxious they should eat some fresh grass before being milked. He then set off on foot for Cork a distance of eighty two miles for he wanted to pay the rent to the landlord. He returned in time to bring in the cows that evening and he milked some of them.
