  1. The potatoes blackened and rotted in the ground. The people died in thousands of hunger and sickness known as the Plague. They had to eat Indian meal and nettles. The English built soup-houses in every district, but a Catholic should become a "Souper" before he got relief.
    The seed potatoes for the following year were got from Scotland and sewn broadcast like grain These were "Champions" They are said to have picked the "eyes" out with a quill for seed and eaten the remains for food in some places.
