- (continued from previous page)repair leaking tins. Long ago it was customary to keep broken vessels in the house until a mender came along. Some time ago my father said these tinkers used to make moulds for the people around here when they used make candles in the homes. The families of tinkers which often visit this district are the Driscolls and Coffeys of Bantry.
Gypsies travel in large caravans and they stay in towns and public places such as cross roads and they go about selling tables and carpets. Some gypsy women pretend to be fortune tellers and tell fortunes for the people.
In times gone by the travellers to this locality were more numerous than they are now. Travelling women often came around but now no women come except gypsy and tinder women.
Some of the travellers get alms for playing music on different instruments. The travellers who visit this district are James Cronin from Kerry, Dan Coakley from Drimoleague, John Boyd from Skibbereen and Ryan from Cork.(continues on next page)- Collector
