- Basket-making was one of the many ancient crafts in which the Irish Peasantry excelled. They made beautiful baskets of very intricate designs which were elegant to behold. There were very few basket makers in this locality however and they did not specialize to any great extent in fancy basket making, but generally made the common type used on the farm.Denis Cronin who was nic-named "Black Denis" and lived in Coomkeen was an expert basket maker. He grew his own twigs and in the harvest he cut them (or what was left of them as the garden was often raided) and left them to dry and season for a time which prevented the possibility of their cracking when bent.He then stood standards in the ground the height and distance apart varying according to the size of the basket. Between these he wove the toughened, slender, pliable rods one at a time slowly and steadily varying the pattern according to necessity or design. He continued in this manner until he had made it the required size. When completed they were veritable masterpieces and were famous both far and near.There was also another type of basket used for straining(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
