- The system of teaching in ancient Ireland was vastly different from that of the present day. During the Penal days schools were prohibited in Ireland and Catholics were unable to get any education whatever. This period was the commencement of the hedge Schools which flourished in the country for over a century. The only school in this district within living memory was the Carrigboy National School which has now been converted into a Parochial Hall. It is also reputed that there were hedge schools in Ballycomane but I cannot vouch for the accuracy of those accounts. They were supposed to have been held in the fields during the Summer months and in outhouses in the Winter. The teachers were generally wandering poets who had been exiled from their former exalted positions by the downfall of the Irish Chiefs. In medieval times a famous monastic School existed in the vicinity of Kilcrohane which was founded for the education of the O'Daly clan. But it soon became famous far and wide as a seat of learning and people flocked to it from all over Europe. No names of teachers in hedge-schools are available nor is any account of(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
