When the Blessed Virgin stood under the cross weeping, the swallows came swooping, and darting over her, trying to comfort her, even the were sorrowful at the sad sight, and flew closer and closer, flying round and round untill they swept her breast with their soft feathers as the passed by. The tears were falling from Our Lady's eyes, and they fell on the upturned breasts of the swallows, and whenever a tear fell on the feathers they turned white. And they are sometimes called Our Lady's birds.
