   The Potato - Crop. Potatoes are grown on out farm. Half an acre is sown under potatoes each year, and it often times varies The potatoes are sown both in drills and ridges. There are six scrapes put in every ridge and a furrow left between each ridge. There are two scrapes put in each drill. A plough is usually used for dills and a spade is used for ridges. Wooden ploughs were always used in olden days but there are none to be got now. The spades are bought in a shop. The potatoes are prepared for sowing as follows:-- Medium sized potatoes are selected for seed and cut into slits leaving a bud on each slit. Some farmers put them in turf mould and others shake lime on them to protect them from slugs when they are sown. The neighbours usually help one another at the sewing of the potatoes particularly at the shovelling. The potatoes are sprayed two or three times during their period of growth so as to keep away the blight. The potatoes are dug in Autumn and they are picked by the children.
