  1. The roofs of the old houses were made of fir or bog-wood dug up when cutting turf. The rafters made from it were joined together by timber pegs of oak. As no iron bolts were then made the slates were also held on with timber pegs about two inches long and as thick as a lead pencil.
    All the horse shoe nails were made by the black smith in the forge. Very thin easily bent nails were made by the smith and used for pig rings.
    Long splinters of fir were used in the houses in-stead of candles held by special holders made by the black smith.
