The people were extra superstitious about taking out fire from the house on churning day. The fire was supposed to keep away any misfortune from the barrel, and if in winter the butter was extra slow in making, the people of the house would redden the shovel in the fire to drive out the badness or for a very slow butter-barrel in making, a coulter of a plough or some bit of steel was reddened in the fire to frighten away the evil spirit.
