  1. The Local Fairs 31 : 3 : 38
The local fairs are held in Ballaghaderreen. Buyers sometimes come to farmers' houses or to a cross-roads to transact business.
the fairs are held in the fair-green. Tolls are paid on cattle sold. Sixpence is paid on a cow, threepence on a few months old calf and twopence on a suck calf.
When an animal is sold luck-money is usually given. Two or three shillings is generally given on a cow, but it usually depends on the price of the animal.
Marks are put on cattle sold. Dealers usually mark cattle with paint or by clipping some of the hair off the side of the animal. When farmers buy cattle they generally mark them with a piece of earth.
The three great fairs of the year are the twenty fifth of March, May Day and November Day.
