- In the olden times bull-calves were not as valuable as they are now. When they were a week or two old they were brought to the local butcher and sold to him.There was a butcher living in each village. The butchers killed the calves and sold them out in quarters at a shilling each.The people came and bought them. They brought them home and boiled the veal as it was called.Then they fried it and ate it.(continues on next page)
