    a barracks, a Catholic and Protestant church two banks, two mills and a dispensary there presently.
    Mountrath was once an important town but it decreased in population and industry since no trains stopped at the station there.
    The people who lived in Mountrath long ago were mostly Protestants and no Catholic could take possession of a business house there. Nearly all the buildings are three stories high.
    The bottle factory was in Cranagh (now Crannagh). The soap and cloth factory were on the bank of the little river which runs through the town the soap factory was in Factory street and the fever hospital was in Shannon street where the stores are presently.
