- Up to about eighty years ago, stout was made in Ardnagowna near Elphin, now known as the Store-Hills. It belonged to the Lloyd family. There were about ten or twelve workers. These got about sixpence per day. The Lloyds left the district.
Linen was made by journey-men weavers. It was made from flax and was a very good cloth. Many of the pieces made over a hundred years ago are still to be found in this parish. The material was much better than linen made by machinery.
A Tannery, where leather was made, also existed in Elphin. This supplied local leather needs. From the leather manufactured there, all local shoemakers made their boots and shoes.
Coopers were numerous up to recently; They made all dairy requirements : churns, tubs, firkins, jogglers, dashes, prints bowls, noggins, and basins.
The district had also excellent whitesmiths. The patron saint of Elphin was a whitesmith. These whitesmiths made : chalices, crosses, locks, keys,(continues on next page)
