  1. Long ago the old people used to put a small coal under the churn for fear there would not be any butter in it.
    If anyone comes into the house while you are churning, he or she has to churn a while because the old people say he or she might bring the butter.
    Long ago my mother was making a churning and a woman of the village came in when the churning was made my mother went out for a few sods of turf, and when she came in there was not a bit of butter in the churn.
