4/6. There were two shoemakers in Robertstown a long time ago, their names were James Carroll, and James Murray, and a brogue-maker, Pat Connolly. Before they came there, a man, Pat Donegan, used to come with a car-load of brogues from Edenderry to Robertstown and all the people used to come there to buy brogues from him. There were no sizes in boots that time, and when a person wanted to buy a pair of brogues, he would wet his foot and put it down on the ground, and then he would get a piece of a sally and cut it the length of the mark on the ground, and then buy the brogues according to the stick. People living near each other used to borrow brogues from each other. One man would go to First Mass on a Sunday with the brogues on him, and he would lend them to another man to go to second Mass.
