    the stalk. A girl took the handstroke, which was made of wood and had a sharp edge, and beat the flax. When on end was well beaten the girl lifted the flax and shook it. She then turned the other end and beat it too.

  2. Crochet lace was a fireside industry which was very extensive in this district up to twenty years ago. Girls from they left school till they were married sat crocheting all. Crochet lace was sold for three or four shillings a yard.
