It was said that they would have to dig all day before they would get a small can of potatoes. The people had to eat dogs, rats and frogs stuffed with oatmeal fried on the pan.
They would go through the fields and gather weeds, and boil them and eat them. At the time of the famine porridge houses were set up in every houses were set up in every part of the country. There was one at Rossnaglough at a house called John Smyth's There was another at Greenan's Cross.
