The name "Ardfert" signifies, the "Hill of Miracles," or the "High place of Ert." In early times it suffered severely from fire and sword, and was burned in the years 1089, 1151, again in 1179, and in the wars of [1641], nothing but the walls of the Cathedral were left. The Cathedral is dedicated tot St. Brendan, who was a native of this part of the country.
The following buildings still exist in whole or in the past on the Cathedral site.
