    In '98, dark '98, when Erin fought so well,
    Among her heroes grand and great of one I'd like to tell.
    Myles Cullen was his proper name, but from what I did hear,
    They knew him best throughout the West as Miley of the Spear.
    II When at Killala in the West,
    the Frenchmen they did land,
    Bonfires blazed on every hill
    to bear the message grand,
    Of Erin's sons upon the run
    who then did volunteer
    To go at once and join the
    French was Miley of the Spear.

    From Castlebar until they reached
    Coolooney grand and fair,
    Where'er the Frenchmen struck a blow, sure Miley, too was there
    When Humbert's men retreated then
    and things were turning queer,
    One man that would not go from them was Miley of the Spear.
