   were made in every house. The green rushes were pulled and peeled except a long narrow piece in each rush, which was left to keep the candle from breaking. Then they were dried and dipped in oil and after that they were ready for use.

   There were very poor houses in this district in former times. The walls were made of mud and sods, and sometimes the crosswalls were made of turf. The old people used to raise oak sticks in the bog and roof the houses with them. They used to put sods on top of the timber and then thatched it with heather and rushes. The heather was
