  1. Hedge Schools
    Very seldom one hears from the old people around Carrick-on-Shannon about the hedge schools that existed in Ireland long ago.
    I am told that the children of one or two townlands used to gather and select a dry, central place.
    The best educated man or lady used to be selected by the priest and local committee.
    The place having been found and approved of, the men from the adjacent townlands would gather and erect a sod house of tough, mountainy sods and stones. The house would comprise one large apartment. Then it
