- Hedge Schools Very seldom one hears from the old people around Carrick-on-Shannon about the hedge schools that existed in Ireland long ago.
I am told that the children of one or two townlands used to gather and select a dry, central place.
The best educated man or lady used to be selected by the priest and local committee.
