    of fire is to keep the cream in the churn hot. Other people say that there wouldn't be any luck in the butter without the red coal. Some people put holy water in it and if they had not any holy water in the house they would wait until Sunday to get it before they would do the churning. If the churning took more than a quarter of an hour they would say that the fairies had the butter taken. Then they would take the churn and throw away every drop of the cream for fear the fairies would stay in the house.
